Assessing The Weekend: Quiet As A Mouse
I suppose it was pretty appropriate that a movie about a mouse was released on the last quiet weekend of the year. It wasn’t the smallest weekend of the year, but after a booming November, December has really tailed off. Maybe it’s due to the quality of the movies or maybe the general bad weather across most of the country. Whichever it really is, I attribute it to the former.
Yes Man won the weekend with an $18 million haul. It wasn’t spectacular, but it was enough. It was well short of my $28 million prediction. Part of my misfire was due to producer David Heyman’s last four movies averaging between $17,000 and $26,000 per screen. When Yes Man manages $5,000 per screen, those big numbers throw off the calculation. Strangely enough, when I used Jim Carrey’s average for his last four

Weekend Predictions: 12-19-08
Well it’s finally the big, huge pre-Christmas weekend. It’s also the weekend where they shoehorn in the movies that couldn’t hang with the big boys in November but are too big to dump in January.
Snatch up a copy of my spreadsheet before they’re all gone.
The biggest release this weekend is Yes Man, in 3,434 theaters. It looks to be Jim Carrey’s return to inane comedy. He hasn’t gotten to run around flapping his arms and making faces much since Bruce Almighty. You could argue that Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who and Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events were big successes for Carrey, but seeing as how there’s someone else’s name in titles, it might not have really mattered who was in his role. When Carrey has been the sole big name in a movie where

Assessing The Weekend: Bullseye
I don’t like to toot my own horn. Really I don’t. But like Jerry Reed said, when you’re hot, you’re hot. For the second time, I’ve nearly nailed one of my predictions. The Day the Earth Stood Still ended the weekend at $30,480,153. My prediction was $30,308,659, a difference of $171,494. Not as close as I was on Max Payne, but not bad using a formula to make a prediction to the dollar.
TDTESS didn’t do as well as some of the recent sci-fi remakes, but it should do alright. $30 million against the $80 million budget isn’t a great number, but TDTESS has been pretty popular oversees and should turn a nice profit once the worldwide totals are tallied.
Delgo, on the other hand, boy I feel sorry for everyone involved with it. The project started in 1999

Weekend Predictions: 12-12-08
What a weekend for the triumphant return of the weekend predictions. We’ve got a overwrought sci-fi remake and an animated movie that no one has heard of. They’re the two widest releases, but they’re on total opposite ends of the spectrum.
Check out the handy spreadsheet.
The biggest release of the weekend, and the biggest in Alpha Centauri, is The Day the Earth Stood Still. If they were going to send a movie into space, why not a good movie? Fortunately all the residents of Alpha Centauri have four years for this movie to arrive. At least they have more time to prepare. The rest of us have to endure this mess right now. It’s funny that both Keanu Reeves and director Scott Derrickson both claim to have a dislike of remakes but somehow ended up in one. They defend it as a reimagining and

Assessing The Weekend: Punisher Punishes The Box Office
What do you get when you have one new wide release and the previous five week’s picked over corpses? You get the fourth smallest weekend of the year at $76,677,578- a 50% decrease from the previous weekend.
The only new release of any size was Punisher: War Zone. Even though 2004’s The Punisher didn’t do much even with John Travolta’s name, Lionsgate felt it was wise to give the franchise a makeover without having any recognizable names. When Dominic West, Ray Stevenson, and Wayne Knight are the biggest names, you better have a damned good movie if you expect to make any money. But Punisher: War Zone is not a good movie. It pulled in just $4,271,451 with the only competition coming from movies released up to five weeks ago. War Zone’s weekend total equates to about

Assessing The Weekend: Holiday Crapshoot
If you hadn’t noticed, I passed on making a prediction for this past weekend. Aside from making changes to the site, I just wasn’t sure how to approach the long weekend- four days for most of us, but five days as far as movies are concerned. Maybe Thanksgiving day would be especially high or low, maybe Wednesday and Thursday would be big and the rest of the weekend would peter out. And my uncertainty wasn’t totally unfounded: Wednesday the 19th made $6,526,023 while the 26th pulled in $33,325,833, yet Friday, Saturday, and Sunday were nearly the same as the previous week.
Somehow 4.4 million people went to see Four Christmases. That was enough to win the three-day weekend at $31,069,826. Why you people did that, I can’t fathom. I guess a movie billed as a Christmas-themed romantic comedy has the benefit

Assessing The Weekend: I Was A Teenage Emo Vampire
I guess my prediction of the second biggest weekend of the year was wrong. Overall, $156,677,936 was spent at the box office this weekend, making the it eight biggest of the year.

For the first time since the middle of August, moviegoers spent more than $100 million at the movies on back-to-back weekends.

Weekend Predictions: 11-14-08
The title says predictions, but there’s really only one prediction to make. This weekend’s lone, lonely new wide release is the 22nd entry in the James Bond pantheon, Quantum of Solace.
