Weekend Predictions: 12-12-08

What a weekend for the triumphant return of the weekend predictions. We’ve got a overwrought sci-fi remake and an animated movie that no one has heard of. They’re the two widest releases, but they’re on total opposite ends of the spectrum.

The biggest release of the weekend, and the biggest in Alpha Centauri, is The Day the Earth Stood Still. If they were going to send a movie into space, why not a good movie? Fortunately all the residents of Alpha Centauri have four years for this movie to arrive. At least they have more time to prepare. The rest of us have to endure this mess right now. It’s funny that both Keanu Reeves and director Scott Derrickson both claim to have a dislike of remakes but somehow ended up in one. They defend it as a reimagining and

Where Do They Reimagine This Stuff?

Variety offers up all the gory details of a Moby Dick remake or adaptation or what have you. Yes, the “graphic novel-style version” of Moby Dick, now in movie form! That’s right, the tale of man’s futile obsession with conquering nature will be turned into a story of a crazed whale and the heroic captain that harpooned it’s ass.

A Disturbing Rip-off

It took almost a year and a half, but the trust that holds the rights to the story the Rear Window was officially based on have filed a lawsuit alleging Dreamworks, Viacom, Steven Spielberg and others should have also secured the rights to the story.

Tarzan And The Reimagining

The article bills it as a reimagining, which, due do it’s over-over-overuse in the marketing of the confounding Plant of the Apes remake, has given the movie a cinematic scarlet letter for me.
