Public Domain Movie Of The Week: The Stranger
What do you get when an innovative, egomaniacal director who makes movies that don’t make any money sets out to prove to everyone that he can work within the Hollywood system? You get Orson Welles’ The Stranger. It’s generally regarded as Welles’ most conventional offering, but that doesn’t mean it’s just a run-of-the-mill thriller.
Welles plays Franz Kindler, a Nazi war criminal hiding out in a small Connecticut town. Rather than just lie low and keep to himself, Kindler works as a history teacher and is about to marry the daughter of a Supreme Court judge. UN war crimes investigator Mr. Wilson (Edward G. Robinson) scours the globe in search of Kindler, until finally releasing and following one of Kindler’s associates. An intense game of cat-and-mouse ensues as Kindler does all he can to conceal his identity.

Ridley Scott To Roll The Dice On Monopoly
It is with total WTF stunned puzzlement that I pass along that Scott is attached to direct a movie based on the Monopoly board game.

A New Hat For Bruce Willis
Bruce Willis will be finally be making his way behind the camera for Three Stories About Joan. A little blurb in the Shreveport Times spilled the beans, also stating the movie will star Willis, Owen Wilson and Kieran Culkin.

David O. Tussle
Russell directed two of my favorite movies, Three Kings, the most under-appreciated movie of 1999, and Flirting with Disaster, which is absolutely hilarious. I’d heard that Russell and George Clooney didn’t get along on Three Kings, mostly due to Russell trying to break Clooney of his ER habits, namely walking into a room and not making eye contact with anyone.

Feeling The Burn
The early reports are in and it looks like Burn After Reading will be crowned King of the Weekend, raking in $19.4 million. That number sounds pretty decent, but I would have expected a heavily marketed comedy starring Brad Pitt and George Clooney and directed by the reigning Best Director winners would have done a little better. How much better? I don’t know.

5 Incredible Debuts For Actors Turned Director
There are many reasons an actor may decide to step behind the lens. Maybe they’re a control freak or a raging egomaniac that can’t stand someone else telling them what to do. They might get the whole movie thing but can’t even believably play dead. Or maybe it’s just something they’ve always wanted to try. Once in a while they come up with something unique that stands out from the crowd.

A Killing Spree In The Badlands
There have been several movies based on the Charles Starkweather/Caril Fugate killing spree of the late 1950’s. Badlands, the debut of writer/director Terrence Malick, is one such movie.

I Scoff At Your Piddly Five Year Plan
He originally signed a three year deal with the studio in 2007, but since he signed on to direct The Hobbit movies, the Universal deal wouldn’t really take effect until 2013 or so. Yep, that’s five years to make the two Hobbit movies. After that, del Toro and Universal have no less than four movies lined up.
