Did Mike Meyers Make The Worst Movie Of 2008?

by Furious
January 3rd, 2009

Up until a few years ago, I always felt compelled to finish watching a movie once I started. I think it’s most likely that I’ve always thought that even if a movie doesn’t entertain, at least I could learn what makes a movie bad. I’m not sure if I’ve just seen enough movies that I get bored easily or that I’ve finally realized I won’t be around forever and value my remaining time way too much, but if I can’t find a reason to keep watching a movie past the first act, I’m done.

the-love-guruOne of the most recent victims of my new philosophy was The Love Guru. And I couldn’t even give that pile until the first act. By the time it got to the hockey rink, I was through with it. In those few minutes it was annoying, stupid, idiotic,

Oscars Might Be Worth Watching

by Furious
December 12th, 2008

I used to watch the Academy Awards religiously. But I stopped watching them as of 2005. The predictability of the winners, celebrity idolization, and grating Tonight Show format created a perfect storm of disgust, so I just read about the winners the next day.

The rumor is that this year the producers are going to chose a non-comedian to host and dump the intro monologue/song-and-dance. This is great news! The format is tired and the jokes always either childish or ego-stroking. Other than to stretch the show out to sell more advertising, I never really saw the point of the big comedy segments. It almost got the feel of a variety show at times.

They needed to do something to liven things up- last year’s Oscars was the lowest rated since ratings for the show were tracked. Some point

by Furious
September 23rd, 2008

For the inaugural edition of Public Domain Movie of the Week, what better choice than His Girl Friday? Directed by the legendary Howard Hawks and starring Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell, it is a classic, some would say the classic, screwball comedy.

This Date In Movie History

by Furious
September 19th, 2008

September 19th isn’t a day too many people use to reflection on what was going on with movies in years past. It’s kind of in that dead area after Summer and before the ego-stroking award season.

For Movies, June 1981 Is A Very Good Vintage

by Furious
August 17th, 2008

So, when looking back, June 1981 was a very good month for movies. You may be thinking that’s pretty obvious since that was when Raiders of the Lost Ark, Superman II, and the latest James Bond caper For Your Eyes Only were released, but there were several other movies released that month that made it something special.

Serendipity

by Furious
July 4th, 2008

So, one of the websites I check out daily is The List Universe. It’s a site full of lists, usually pretty interesting. The other day they had a list of the greatest Italian directors, and Roberto Benigni was on the list at #10. I hadn’t seen any of his movies, but I thought his inclusion was a little dubious and based solely on the popularity of Life Is Beautiful. I mean he made the list and Dario Argento didn’t? (aside- My greatest memory about Life Is Beautiful was when Benigni won the Academy Award for Best Actor. There was a cutaway of Tom Hanks looking thoroughly disgusted that he didn’t win, which I relished because he was turning into a thespianiacal elitist.)

A couple days …
